You’ve got your brand new sofa in prime position. Your living room is looking perfect… Almost. Hold on, there’s something missing? One more item is required to turn your house into a home; an armchair.
Much like your sofa, choosing the perfect living room armchair is not a decision to be taken lightly. It’s still an investment piece for your home, so you’ll want to be sure you have put in the right thoughts and considerations before taking the plunge. Not sure where to start? Well bespoke furniture experts, James and Rose, is here to help you out.
How big is your living room overall? How big is the sofa and where does it currently sit? Don’t forget about other furnishings such as your TV stand and coffee table. Where will your new armchair go? And, most importantly of all, do you have room for it? After all, a cramped and busy living room doesn’t make for easy and comfortable living.
As you’re reading this article, we presume you haven’t purchased an armchair as part of a matching set with your sofa. If that’s the case, make sure your new addition matches well with your existing style. ‘Mix and match’ can look fantastic when it’s done right, but it has to look deliberate and not like you’ve pulled an abandoned armchair off the street.
The key to pulling off the mix and match look is to choose two stunning pieces that are each beautifully designed in their own way, and then allow them room to breathe and own their part of the room. If your overall look is quite minimalistic, then this approach will make a strong statement.
Make sure you choose a fabric that fits in with your lifestyle. If you have children or pets, a classic (but durable) leather might be your best bet. On the other hand, cat owners may want to avoid plush velvet.
Removable and washable covers are the most practical and sensible option, and with a little TLC, your beloved armchair could look stunning for years to come.
There’s a whole rainbow of shades out there to choose from, so don’t be afraid to take the time to really explore your options and find the perfect colour. In your living room, take a step back and really examine the colours that are present both in and outside the room. Are there any strong hues visible through nearby windows? Think about which colours and patterns are most likely to work alongside what’s already available.
For example, if you are beach side (and incredibly lucky) then a traditional vertical stripe with blue and white would work perfectly.
To help remove some of the guesswork, see if you can get swatches of the fabric you love the most to more effectively visualise how the colour works in the light or your room and with the shades around it.
Perhaps more important than all of the other factors we have discussed, you want to make sure your new armchair is comfortable above everything else. Comfort isn’t something that we can teach you; it’s pretty much individual to each and every person as there are a lot of different factors to consider. Avoid choosing something just because it’s “on trend”; and opt for something that’s going to make you happy.
