What are Common Boiler Problems?

If you use a boiler for heating and cooling, it’s important to know how boilers work. It’s equally important to know about the most common types of repairs boilers need

Here are some of the most common boiler problems to look out for.

The Radiators Aren’t Heating Up

One of the most common problems with boilers is that the radiators won’t heat up. The cause of this issue is usually due to a buildup of either air or sludge. Because of this build-up, the boiler won’t have an equal heat distribution.

As per how you can fix this depends on where the problem is occurring. If it’s just the bottom of your radiator that heats up, for example, then the boiler must be bled.

You Start Hearing Odd Sounds

Boilers are typically silent in most cases, so if you begin hearing noises such as whistling or gurgling, it’s a sign that something is wrong. In fact, the type of noise actually dictates what kind of problem is occurring.

A noise is an indicator for a lot of issues such as having low water pressure to kettling. It’s important to pay attention to the noise that your boiler is making so you can easily pinpoint the issue.

The Condensate Pipes are Frozen

This problem mostly occurs with newly installed boilers. When a new boiler is used, it starts condensing. When a boiler condenses, it takes gas and turn it into water. It is then drained through the condensate pipe. During the cold winter months, this can cause the condensate pipes to freeze, which causes a blockage.

The Boiler is Switching Itself Off

Although not as common as the previous issues, your boiler can actually turn itself off. If you’re experiencing this, then it could be because there’s not enough pressure. Another cause of this would be the pump is malfunctioning or there’s a blockage.

The Boiler is Leaking

There are many different causes of a leaky boiler. Before you can get your boiler repaired, you must first find the source of the leak. While it may be tempting to do it yourself, it’s heavily advised against. You’ll need to hire a professional in order to determine the source.

Some common causes of a leaky boiler include high amounts of pressure, a damaged or broken component, the boiler has corroded or the pump seal is too old. In most cases, a leak can be repaired but if the problem is too severe, you’re better off replacing the boiler instead.
